House in Providence

Providence, RI | 2024 | 3500 sq.ft

When working on this renovation project, we aimed to preserve the authenticity and charm of the original 1937 house while also bringing some modern touches through contemporary forms of new furniture and art pieces. The character of the house is supported by classic features - mouldings, timeless floor solutions like checkerboard tiles and herringbone wood flooring. The layout of the first floor was reconfigured into an open-plan space, combining the living room, kitchen with a kitchen island, and a dining area. The checkerboard flooring continues in the guest bathroom, reinforcing material continuity throughout the home. Dark walls in the guest bathroom create a cozy and moody atmosphere; the floral ceiling and brass accents and details bring warmth and sophistication.

This guest bedroom has a simple design with warm white-painted walls, yet it gains character through a few distinctive elements. A yellow lime-wash finish of the ceiling unifies the space and adds depth. The armchair in the same yellow color compliments the ceiling and reinforces the color continuity and warmth of the interior. The wall opposite the bed features a custom millwork that integrates a desk area with generous storage. Floral wallpaper at the back adds a refined and unique visual layer. Graphic elements on the rug introduce contrast and bring dynamic to the overall atmosphere.

A moody palette defines the interior of the master suite located on the attic floor and was intentionally designed to feel private and restful. The walls and ceiling finished with one deep green tone reinforce the calm and whimsical atmosphere. The dark oak flooring complements the overall character of the space and adds depth. Carefully selected furniture, lighting, and decor contribute to a cohesive atmosphere. We preserved two small uniquely shaped windows in the bathroom that bring authenticity and architectural character to the space. The bath layout includes a dedicated shower area, vanity, and toilet, providing all essential functions within a compact footprint. Mosaic floor tiles add intricacy and a touch of playfulness. The black marble countertop and oak vanity pair beautifully with the green walls, creating a rich and harmonious palette.
